The Art Of Self Care

Summary

Self-care can be defined as actions performed by an individual to obtain and preserve physical and mental wellness.  Such activities would be those that achieve a healthy mind, body and spirit (or soul).  Self-care treatments can be activities such as drinking plenty of water daily, keeping a journal, eating a healthy diet, resting, socializing, exercising both mentally and physically, reducing stress and learning coping skills as well as utilizing methods to control symptoms and even reverse controllable disease processes to improve overall health.  According to the World of Psychology, it is important to find those activities that are individually enjoyable (Psych-Central , 2014).  If someone does not have an interest in meditation, yoga or writing in a journal, find those activities that will create joy and relaxation and do the same for physical activities.  Remember the old adage “You will take better care of others by taking care of yourself first.”

Various acts of self-care have long been studied and practiced discovering the many health benefits that provide immediate and lasting results.  Believers that look to natural healing to recover from illness will find that along those self-care practices, exercise and diet are the most effective ways to prevent, alleviate and even cure some illness.  Leading a healthier life can be possible when following simple routines and knowing what the body needs.  Lack of exercise and poor dieting has affected those of all ages.  Inactivity and the need to just eat something to stop the hunger has led many people to become obese and create abnormal eating habits resulting in out of sync blood sugar levels thus inducing Diabetes.  This illness can be prevented and reversed by basic knowledge and educating oneself.  This would be education in knowing the key factors to the causes, preventions, and most importantly individualized treatment.

The focus of this wiki page is centered on the 3 themes of reducing stress and its importance to health, yoga as a physical tool and reversing the effects of diabetes to optimize health.  Clicking on the links below will direct you to their representative pages.  Diabetes information has been provided to help educate the general population of the facts in order to help reduce this widespread disease.  These themes touch on the mental, physical and disease monitoring aspects of self-care. Summary Reflection

The practice of self-care has had a really positive impact on my overall well-being. When I first learned about this practice it seemed to me that it would be fairly easy to implement into my life because I figured it was something that would come very natural. However I found that it takes just as much effort and intention as any of the other transformational practices. It also requires planning and extra time. The challenging part was not adopting the new behaviors, but rather changing the behaviors that I currently have so that I could make space in my life to adopt new self-care behaviors. The self-care techniques that I engaged in for this transformational practice included smiling and laughing often, drinking an adequate amount of water to stay hydrated, having a morning ritual, exercising regularly, and managing stress. Some of these techniques came very naturally and others not so much. For instance, smiling and laughing often can take place anywhere at anytime so this one was much simpler to take part in. Staying hydrated took a little more effort than expected and having a morning ritual was the most challenging. Since there was so much variation with this practice, it was also difficult to maintain an effective tracking system. I have a student planner so by marking the days that I fully engaged in the self-care techniques and which ones was the best way to do this. I did my best to take part in the techniques every day even though there were definitely a few days out of the week that I would become so overwhelmed with everyday tasks that I would simply forget. I have also found that some of the techniques I practiced are starting to become second nature for me which is great because they take less effort, such as smiling often and staying hydrated. These self-care techniques can be applied in just about any setting. Some of the techniques require planning and others not so much. Smiling often and staying hydrated, for example, can be applied in a personal or professional setting very easily and do not require much planning. Whereas, having a morning and nighttime ritual can take a bit more planning and effort. For me, my morning ritual included having green tea or lemon water, a good stretch, and a meditation session and this ritual requires making time and having resources. To successfully participate in this I had to set my alarm earlier which also meant going to sleep earlier, make sure I had tea at my house, making sure I had my yoga mat, and having my headphones and podcast ready to do a guided meditation. Hi Students - I love the icon you've chosen! Do you plan to focus on Yoga and Diabetes as part of your 3 elements?

Jacqui :)

Yes, these are the 3 elements that were chosen as self-care: reducing stress, yoga and reversing diabetes (I am assuming through diet & exercise) (April Kinsey)

Great job guys! I really loved how you all decided to organize your thoughts and how the layout of your wiki is. Two things that I really enjoyed about your wiki would have to be the way that you made your three discussion points links, this really made it much easier to read and follow your wiki. I also enjoyed this because it gave your wiki a terrific, organized and simple cover page. The second part that I really enjoyed was your introduction to self-care paragraph. It was so easy to follow and the fact that you had a reference for it was terrific. If I would make a suggestion it would be to make it a little more energetic. Other than that great job, I loved it (Karl Beeston.

Hey guys! Nice wiki page. I really like how you detailed and gave some specific examples of ways a person could practice self-care besides just your three main topics. This might seem silly, but one of my favorite things was the photo on the top of the page. It just spoke volumes and to me represented human hands recognizing that self-care is all about love. My two suggestions would involve your references for the summary. For April's citation, it would be good to add the words, "Retrieved from" right before the url for the website and only capitalize the first word in the title of your reference. It would also be helpful and lend credibility to Melissa's thoughts in the summary if she included a good reference and in-text citation. Those are little things though! I think you did great! Hi Debi,
Due to a conflict in her schedule Melissa contributed to the summary after the assignment due date so it was added after the fact but we will work together to convert it into one for the final project. I believe the link also belongs to her summary to thank you for the input we will correct this. Thank you for your positive feedback. (April Kinsey)

Well that was goofy of me! After I looked over our page I realized that was my link. Wow how fast our mind goes! You can tell my focus was off before I started my medication. Thank you for your suggestion on the reference I will add the retrieved from, it makes sense. There are different styles of reference and I thought I did mine APA but will have have to fix those. Thanks again Debi!

Hi Self-Care Group,
I think you all did a great job on your Wiki Webpage. I love they layout and how you broke each topic into sections with all the information pertaining to it on one page. It does not seem too overwhelming and it is easy on the eyes. (Denise Tejada)

Hi Self Care, I love the icon pic at the top. It really does fit your topic perfect. I'm not sure if I am not seeing things correctly but it appears that you are missing a lot of info. Where are the References and all the other required info? Let me re-read and try again. (Joseph Araiza)

Okay, I needed to click on the links and WOW. Great Job!! The only improvement is that I had trouble knowing to click on links but I guess that is my fault. (Joseph Araiza)

Hello Self-Care group!
I really enjoyed your organized wiki page. There seemed to be an equal amount of input from all members and the layout of the page is very clean, simplistic, and organized with colorful words and I don't know how you make the links to different pages on the subject of stress reduction, yoga, and reversing the effects of diabetes. Impressive. I am looking into yoga (bodywork) as my second transformational change and I enjoyed the yoga link! What I enjoyed were the you tube videos. I will definitely use the "Flexibility & Range of Motion, beginner yoga with Tara Stiles" video this week as well as looking into the book- Yoga for Anxiety: Meditations and Practices for calming the body and mind paperback. I do think this will be a good read and I also thought including a child's book was a great idea. If someone is practicing yoga and a child is interested, they will be able to start early and read and do their research.
We got to always keep in mind that "if we want to take care of others, we must first take care of ourselves" approach and that introduction line really drew me in. I really don't have anything you could improve on, there were great links, pictures of the books, and great website links. All in all, great job. (Pamela Denny)

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful comments and suggestions. Joseph I am so glad you realized to clink on the links directly. I had a moment of panic when I read your first message thinking we had forgotten so much. I thought the separate link format would make it so much easier to follow? If anyone wants to know how I accomplished this just let me know but basically I added a page and then linked it. It look me a few tries to make it work but ultimately I think it worked out well. I was intimidated by this Wiki project at first but then found it to be fun and actually a great tool for future uses. (April Kinsey)

Changes made for final Wiki: revised book references as commented to correct format of no capitals after first word (APA) and added retrieved from, added child yoga poses-website attachment and reference, reformatted reducing stress page to get alignment in tact for visual aesthetic, merged summaries on page (April Kinsey)
